Promoção do destino

09.04.2025

The team develops a set of activities aimed at the American trade and press, with a view to promoting Portugal as a destination and supporting the commercial action of Portuguese tourism companies. Strongly geared towards the detection of commercial opportunities, as well as contributing to the visibility and reputation of the destination. Knowledge-based action, through a constant search for technical information and connection to knowledge networks.

// The market
The United States has consolidated itself as one of the most important source markets for tourists, with continuous and significant growth in recent years. This market is characterised by several particularities that make it strategic for the tourism sector in Portugal.

The market has a significant economic impact in Portugal, with above-average daily spending. This expenditure is channelled not only to accommodation and restaurants, but also to cultural activities, shopping and luxury experiences, contributing to the dynamism of the local economy in various regions of the country.
It offers significant opportunities for expansion, through the diversification of the geographical profile of tourists coming from US, the promotion of lesser-known destinations in Portugal, and the creation of new tourism products that respond to the high and sophisticated expectations of American tourists.

// Tourist profile
The number of American tourists visiting Portugal has been rising steadily, driven by several factors, such as the increase in direct air routes between the two countries, the growing visibility of Portugal as a tourist destination of excellence, and the perception of Portugal as a safe and culturally rich country.
Those who choose Portugal as a holiday destination tend to belong to the upper-middle and upper classes, with high purchasing power. These travellers are looking for authentic and personalised experiences, and have a strong interest in culture, history, gastronomy and wine tourism. The luxury and ultra-luxury segment is particularly important, with many tourists looking for stays in boutique hotels and luxury resorts, and exclusive experiences, such as wine itineraries and dinners in renowned restaurants.

American tourists value the authenticity and quality of experiences, with a strong inclination towards cultural activities, visits to historical heritage and immersion in the local culture. Destinations such as Lisbon, Porto, the Douro and the Algarve are among the preferences, but there is also a growing interest in less-explored destinations, such as Central Portugal, the Alentejo, the Azores and Madeira, which offer a unique combination of a stand-out offering, nature and culture.

The increase in direct air routes, especially by companies such as TAP Air Portugal and United Airlines, but also by Delta Airlines, SATA Azores Airlines and American Airlines, has facilitated and boosted access to Portugal. From the USA, these airlines operate direct routes to Portugal from NY JFK, Newark, Boston, Miami, Washington Dulles, Philadelphia, Chicago and San Francisco, serving six Portuguese airports (FAO, FNC, LIS, OPO, PDL and TER).
