Tourism Team - Germany

Promoção do destino

02.04.2025

The Berlin Tourism Team provides relevant information about the market, including lists of German tourism companies. It also organises or coordinates participation in fairs for professionals and the general public. These fairs provide an excellent opportunity to promote Portuguese companies, and the team is responsible for assessing the value of attending various exhibitions including:

- ITB em Berlim
- IMEX em Frankfurt
- CMT em Estugarda
- Free em Munique
- TourNatur em Düsseldorf

At the same time, the team liaises and advises specific approaches, depending on the goals and strategies outlined by the companies for the German market.

// German market
The German market showed a strong recovery in the post-pandemic period, with an increase in holiday spending, demonstrating that despite the difficulties and economic crises, Germans continue to travel and invest in travel. Germany continues to position itself in the top three source markets for Portugal. In 2023, it ranked 2nd in number of overnight stays and 3rd in revenue generated.

// Tourist profile
German consumers are critical and demanding, always prioritising "value for money" in their choices. Even in times of financial hardship, they choose to adjust spending in other areas, but they rarely forgo holidays, looking for longer, more diverse trips. In the case of Portugal, the most visited regions are Madeira, the Algarve and Lisbon, with Germany being the main source market for the Azores.

The main purpose of German travellers is leisure, which accounts for more than 95% of trips. Flying is the second most-used means of transport, after land travel, and more than 50% of travellers choose to stay in hotels (mostly 4- and 5-star hotels, and trending upwards), with average stays being between 8 and 9 nights. Although Germany is a market with a high volume of groups, with many people preferring to buy package holidays through travel agencies and tour operators, more than half of travellers make their own arrangements, especially couples and families with children. Online bookings have been growing significantly and progressively replacing face-to-face purchases.
Germans go on holiday and travel more than once a year, with longer stays in the summer and shorter stays in spring and autumn. The most popular tourist products are sun and sea packages and family packages, followed by touring, city breaks and active tourism, particularly hiking and cycling.

// Austrian market
In 2023, Austria was the 17th tourist market for Portugal in terms of number of guests, and 16th in tourism revenue.
The most-visited regions were Greater Lisbon, followed by Madeira, the Algarve and the North. Austrian travellers are similar in profile to Germans, and they stay for six to seven days on average. They travel individually or in groups and the most sought-after products are city breaks, touring, nature, and sun and sea.

// Swiss market
In 2023, Switzerland was the 11th tourist market for Portugal in terms of number of guests and stands out as the 9th market in tourism revenue. The most-visited regions are Greater Lisbon, followed by the Algarve, the North, Madeira and the Azores. Like the Germans, Swiss travellers take more than one holiday a year. They travel as couples, families and groups, and they look for nature, hiking and cycling, touring, gastronomy and wines.
