Sustainability

03.07.2024

The actions set out in the 20-23 Tourism +Sustainability Plan, namely in the strategic axis - Structuring an increasingly sustainable offer - which aims to guide the structuring of tourism products and offers using sustainability principles - include the production of several Thematic Guides to Good Sustainability Practices

These guides aim to support tourism agents in changing their behaviour and adopting best practices, especially in the environmental and social dimensions.

The Guide to Good Sustainability Practices for Nautical Tourism Support Infrastructures on the Coast, Rivers and Reservoirs presents a set of good practices to be implemented by the managers of these infrastructures, with the aim of improving the quality of the experience of nautical enthusiasts and tourists and visitors to marinas and marina ports, minimising their impact on fauna, flora, soil and water resources, promoting continuous improvement in energy efficiency, safeguarding the well-being of communities and the inclusion of all. This guide, coordinated by Turismo de Portugal, was produced with the technical collaboration of several partner organisations: Adene - Agência para a Energia; Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente; Associação Bandeira Azul da Europa; Associação Portuguesa de Portos de Recreio; Comissão de Coordenação de Desenvolvimento Regional do Algarve; Docapesca; Fórum Oceano and Universidade do Algarve.

The Guideline for the Management of Beaches with Surfing Activities aims to provide some guidance to the entities responsible for the management of bathing beaches, ensuring respect for the planning rules, the compatibility of activities, the safety of participants and other users of the Public Maritime Domain (DPM), so that the planning of bathing areas for surfing activities and, where applicable, other surfing activities, takes place within the rules of simplicity, equality and transparency. This guide was drawn up under the auspices of the Working Group for the Monitoring of Tourist Entertainment and is the result of work coordinated by Turismo de Portugal, with the technical collaboration of the  Portuguese Environment Agency (Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente)); the Directorate-General for the Maritime Authority (Direção-Geral da Autoridade Marítima; the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (Direção-Geral de Recursos Naturais, Segurança e Serviços Marítimos) and the Portuguese Sports and Youth Institute (Instituto Português Desporto e Juventude).

The Guide to Good Sustainability Practices for Tourism Entertainment aims to list a set of good practices or alternative management practices that improve the environmental, economic and social sustainability associated with the development of tourist entertainment activities, whether they take place in the field of natural heritage or cultural heritage, with a view to improving the quality of the experience for tourists and visitors, without neglecting the well-being of the local community that hosts them and minimising the impact on that heritage. The aim is to sensitise companies, in the context of their activities, to the contribution they can make to sustainable development, challenging them to continuously improve their management processes in order to achieve better performance levels.

The Guide to Good Practices for Thermal Spas aims to set out good practices and management methodologies that will make it possible to improve environmental, economic and social sustainability practices associated with the operation of thermal spas. As such, the aim is to raise awareness among entities responsible for managing thermal spa establishments as to the effective contribution they can make to the sustainable development of Portugal as a tourist destination, challenging them to continually improve their performance. The preparation of this guide, coordinated by Termas de Portugal Association included the technical collaboration of various experts and by the Portuguese Energy Agency (Agência para a Energia - ADENE).
