SIGTUR - Sistema de Informação Geográfica do Turismo [Geographic Information System for Tourism] is a dedicated geographic information system that Turismo de Portugal has developed to provide a wide range of functionalities to users.

Since tourism is an activity with strong territorial expression, the implementation of a sustained development policy for the sector requires permanent and up-to-date knowledge of the spatialisation of the tourist offer, both in terms of existing tourist accommodation, facilities and infrastructure of interest to tourism, as well as prospects for the development of the sector in accordance with territorial management instruments (IGT) or urbanistic operations.

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) are a fundamental tool for pursuing this goal.

SIGTUR offers two types of themes - business and territorial - providing various types of analysis, namely through cross research of business themes, as well as between these and territorial themes.

In SIGTUR you can view the available themes by clicking on the first icon

(Theme List) in the upper ribbon, as well as perform various types of search:

_ Simple search

By name
for example, the name of the tourist resort.

By geometry
with the options to select point, line or polygon and buffer definition, obtaining by this way (territorial intersection) all occurrences related to the business themes available in the application.

_ Advanced search

can select several attributes of a given theme, as well as select the desired territorial area(s).

The following features are also available:

_ Prospect Accommodation in Tourist Establishments, by territorial area (see the explanation on how to calculate).

_ Tourism offer indicators, calculated based on data from the National Tourism Register (RNT) (tourist enterprises - RNET, local accommodation - RNAL, establishments of tourist entertainment agents - RNAT and branches of travel and tourism agencies - RNAVT), as well as their representation in cartograms.

The alphanumeric information contained in SIGTUR on the RNT is obtained by daily synchronisation (04:00H) with the four registers mentioned.

In the specific case of RNAAT, RNAVT and RNAL (for the most part), georeferencing is obtained automatically from the address and is therefore merely indicative. The reliability of georeferencing can be found in the list of details for each establishment.
