Interreg Euro-MED Programme

Funding and investment

26.07.2023

// Framework

The Interreg Euro-MED Programme supports cooperation across Mediterranean borders by funding projects developed and managed by public administrations, universities, private organisations, and civil society.

The programme brings together partners from 69 regions in 14 countries on the northern shore of the Mediterranean who share a common goal: a neutral and resilient society for the benefit of their citizens. Over the next seven years, it will support projects that aim to make the region smarter and greener and improve governance among its stakeholders.

The programme's total budget amounts to around €294 million for the 2021-2027 period.

// Interreg Euro-MED Programme funds projects that support 4 missions

_ Strengthening an innovative sustainable economy
_ Protecting, restoring and valorising the natural environment and heritage
_ Promoting green living areas
_ Enhancing Sustainable Tourism

The tourism sector is a priority for the Interreg MED Programme, particularly where sustainable tourism is concerned. The programme aims to ensure the protection and valorisation of the area's natural and cultural resources and identifies the urgent need to recover from the severe impacts of the pandemic on this sector, particularly in the Mediterranean region.

The recovery of sustainable tourism is addressed across the board, in all of the programme's priorities. This is to allow "MED regions to practice a tourism governance that enables continuous improvements of environmental, social and economic sustainability, increases competitiveness through quality and innovations and ensures implementation and monitoring of strategies and policies". Indeed, this is, more than ever, an opportunity to support permanent and sustainable change in tourism practices.

Specific types of tourism-orientated actions are provided for in each specific goal and will be specified in the Terms of Reference for each call.
