It conducts promotional campaigns with the aim of boosting the destination's visibility and reputation in the market and captures business opportunities.
// The market
Poland has a population of 38 million and its economy is experiencing one of the highest post-COVID growth dynamics in the EU. Poles like to travel and try to get to know the destination, travelling around the countries they visit and coming into contact with the local people and their culture. Since Poland's post-Soviet political opening, Poles have appreciated and valued the ease with which they can travel
abroad.
There has been a sharp growth in the number of overnight stays and Polish guests in Portugal. In fact, the number of Polish guests in Portugal has almost tripled, up from 123,927 in 2013 to 335,588 in 2023. This trend is related to the increase in the purchasing power of Poles, the opening of new direct routes to Portugal and the very positive image of Portugal as a destination in the eyes of the Polish market.
TAP Air Portugal operates daily flights between Warsaw and Lisbon while WizzAir and Ryanair operate direct flights to Lisbon and Porto. WizzAir also flies to the island of Madeira. The low-cost carriers operate direct flights not only from the Polish capital but also from other major cities: Krakow, Katowice, Wroclaw, Poznan and Gdansk.
// Tourist profile
Although Portugal's image in the Polish market has always been very positive, the perception of Portugal as a destination has evolved significantly. Twenty years ago, religious tourism (Fátima) and sun and beach holidays (Algarve) were the most sought-after products in Portugal. In recent years, however, Polish tourists have also started to take an interest in Portugal for historical and cultural heritage, nature, diverse landscapes, gastronomy (especially fresh fish and seafood dishes) and wines, particularly green wines, and fortified wines, port wine and Madeira wine. Nevertheless, religious tourism remains an important segment.
Poles travelling to Portugal appreciate the safety, the hospitality of the Portuguese, the mild climate, the quality of services, especially hotels and restaurants, and the cleanliness of the beaches.
