Tourism performance

​​​​In 2023, the tourism sector accounted for the highest numbers on record across the main tourism demand indicators. These figures confirm the weight of the sector in the Portuguese economy, with tourist revenue reaching 9.5% of the country’s GDP, and 48.6% and 19.9% of Exports of Services and Global Exports, respectively.
 
In 2023, tourist operations exceeded the record values reached in 2019 in terms of overnight stays (+10.0%) and guests (+10.7%).
 
30.0 million guests were registered, of which 18.3 million were foreigners, an increase of 13.3% and 19.1% respectively, when compared to 2022. 

With a total of 77.2 million overnight stays registered in 2023 - an increase of 10.7% compared to the previous period - 53.8 million overnight stays were by foreign tourists (+14.9% compared to 2022) and 23.4 million by Portuguese nationals (+2.1% compared to 2022). ​

As for tourism revenue, and according to data from the Banco de Portugal (Bank of Portugal), the cumulative revenue registered over the 12 months of 2023 reached 25.1 billion euros, which is an increase of 18.9% from 2022, a year in which revenue was already higher than that recorded in 2019.
